Climate change

That the United States, which has declined to endorse the Kyoto Protocol, has, under compulsion from the global moral pressure in Bali, agreed to the Indian amendment to the road map for a future fight against climate change is a welcome sign. The greatest danger to mankind today is posed not by nuclear weapons, terrorism and wars, but by climate change due to excessive greenhouse gas emissions. Extensive and massive afforestation in Africa, the Amazon, the Far East and India is a long-term solution. In the short term, nations need to concentrate on reducing GHG emissions if the world is to be saved from the impending catastrophe.

It is heartening that in the Bali talks, India intervened effectively to secure the support of all participating nations, including the U.S., to push through a crucial amendment to the road map for the future fight against climate change.

In this context, the unique campaign started by Mumbaikars assumes great significance. With thousands of them turning off their electrical appliances for an hour on December 15, they have set an example for the rest of us to emulate.

The United Nations climate change talks held in Bali were fruitful and created a strong foundation for future talks on the issue.

It is really encouraging to know that even developing countries have agreed to take action on mitigating climate change. India has demonstrated its commitment by saying it has the responsibility to act. As Mahatma Gandhi said, discipline comes from realising responsibility.

V.P. Sreenivasan,

Bangalore
