News Analysis
It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page. In “‘Consumerism and materialism deadlier than armed occupation’” (Op-Ed, December 17, 2007) — an interview with Ramsey Clark, former U.S. Attorney General, on globalisation, the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, the Iraq war, and more — a sentence in the answer in response to the sixth question was “What I am saying is that if I’m the only one to have nuclear weapons and the capacity to deliver than anywhere than I have the peace and none else does.” It was a typographical error and should have been “What I am saying is that if I’m the only one to have nuclear weapons and the capacity to deliver them anywhere then I have the peace and none else does.” A sentence in the answer to the last question was “I think India too sees the enemy in ways it never has never before.” It should have been “I think India too sees the enemy in ways it never has before.”
An item “VSNL is now Tata Communications” (“Briefly – Business” page, December 15, 2007) said that “Telecom company Videsh Sanchar Niger Ltd. (VSNL), formerly owned by the Government and now in the Tata fold, has been renamed Tata Communications Ltd.” It should have been Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited. A sentence in the fourth paragraph of a report “Mullaperiyar case hearing in January” (December 14, 2007) was: “Whether the suit founded on a legal right under the lease deed executed between the government of the Maharaja of Travancore and the Secretary of State for India on October 29, 1986 is barred by Article 131 of the Constitution (original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court).” It was a typographical error and should have been “October 29, 1886”. In a report “TVS Motor launches Flame” (“Business” page, December 14, 2007), the last sentence was incomplete. It read “The target for the next year.” It should have been “The target for the next year was two lakh vehicles, Mr. Venu Srinivasan [Chairman and Managing Director, TVS Motor] said.” (The report was complete in the early editions, but the error, due to a technical problem, occurred in the later editions.)
