Double for Thiruvananthapuram

VATAKARA: Thiruvananthapuram scored a double at the State senior volleyball championship here on Sunday night. In the finals, the men beat Ernakulam 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, while the women defeated Kannur 25-19, 25-20, 25-13.

Sinuraj shines

Sinuraj scored a fine century (118, 77b, 4 x 6, 8 x 4) as Muthoot-ECC defeated Century CC by four wickets to retain the Santosh Menon memorial all-Kerala cricket title at Thrissur on Sunday.

P.J. Thomas, vice-president, Thrissur District Cricket Association, gave away the prizes.

The scores: Century, Ernakulam 316 for nine in 40 overs (Madan Mohan 110, Rakesh 43, Abhishek Hegde 34, M.P. Manu three for 60) lost to Muthoot-ECC, Ernakulam 317 for six in 39.4 overs (Sinuraj 118, Manikandan 69, Madan Pradeep 50, G.P. Unnikrishnan 40 n.o., Shimnaj three for 58).

Special prizes: Sinuraj (Muthoot-ECC, player of the final and series), Pravin V. Achuthan (Octopals, best batsman), Shimnaj (Century, best bowler), Vinil Wilson (Muthoot-ECC, best catch), K.Harikumar (Century, most entertaining innings), Jineesh (BPCL KRL, most promising youngster).

Two records set

Two new meet records were set on the opening day of the Calicut University inter-collegiate athletics meet at the MES Kalladi College Ground, Mannarkkad, near Palakkad on Monday.

Jithin Paul of St. Thomas, Thrissur, set the new record in the men’s 400m, with a time of 48.45, erasing the previous mark of 48.90 set by Richard Scaria of Govt. College, Chittoor, in 2004.

In the women’s 5000m, Jamsheena Ashraf of Vimala, Thrissur, with a time of 18:10.40, broke the record of C.V. Rejimol of Govt. Victoria, Palakkad (18:11.50), established in 2005.
