“Release more water”
Staff Reporter
PUDUKOTTAI: Federation of Pudukottai District Kallanai Kalvai Ayacutdars has urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to take steps to release additional water to tail-end villages of Cauvery delta in Pudukottai district.
A resolution adopted in this regard at the Federation’s meeting held here recently said that with the poor realisation of waters during the north-east monsoon, cultivation of crop had been affected in the tail-end areas in the district. The discharge of waters from the Grand Anicut should be stepped up to 550 cusecs in Merpanaikadu and 350 cusecs in Nakudi, the resolution said.
The resolution said that farmers of Karupattikadu, Chella Pillayarkovil, Kuppathevan -- all in Thanjavur district, and Kattumavadi, Pitchanendal and Mumbalai in Pudukottai district have been finding it difficult to irrigate the crops due to poor supply of water.
The Federation urged the Public Works Department to deploy a special monitoring team at Nakudi for ensuring proper distribution of water.
Federation president A. Ramasamy presided .
