NEW DELHI: A special court dealing with electricity-related cases at Rohini here has convicted and sentenced a power thief to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and also determined a civil liability of Rs. 3 crore in favour of the power company.
According to an NDPL official, the civil liability determined by the court is the highest so far. The accused, Deepak Chawla, was booked for direct theft of electricity by NDPL in 2005. “He was running an ice cream manufacturing unit at Rithala in North-West Delhi. A total connected load of 436.78 KW was found at the premises and the penalty assessment amounted to Rs.3.20 crore,” the official said. “Over 20 different ice cream manufacturing machines including mixer, grinder, oven, washer and softy machines were recovered from the unit during the raid. An FIR was lodged at Rohini and the accused remained in custody for nearly two years and four months before he was granted bail in October 2007 by the High Court of Delhi.”
