3-D GIS to map Delhi

Staff Reporter

Cameras to help in real-time monitoring of encroachments

Monitoring centre for City Zone area set up

System to provide information about the Capital

NEW DELHI: The Union Science and Technology Ministry has put in place a “Three-Dimensional Geographical Information System” and mapped buildings, roads and lanes to create a satellite database for referral. The Ministry has also put up cameras at several points to assist in real-time monitoring of illegal constructions and encroachments.

The 3-D GIS System can be used in several areas of civic interest including urban land management, assessing encroachments and unauthorised constructions, base map preparation, transportation and traffic planning, water supply and sanitation, tourism, and for determining fringe area land use dynamics.

The data from the cameras will be fed to monitoring stations and may be used to generate a “visibility fan” by choosing to activate specifically placed cameras.

The 24-hour surveillance will provide information about fire and accident hazards and complaints of water stagnation.

Other uses of the system include reining in property tax defaulters, checking wastage of water, gas and electricity, managing traffic and monitoring infrastructure development for the upcoming Commonwealth Games-2010. The system will also prove handy during disaster management and help guide emergency services to the required location by means of accurate road maps.

The system also helps in tracing any defect, leakage or any other disorder in water and sewage lines. The location of any breakage of electric wiring can also be detected accurately. With the help of the high-resolution data, an assessment of the area of land under agriculture can be made.

Under the 3-D GIS System, four cameras with a range of 5 km have been installed at Chandni Chowk, Kasturba Hospital and Asaf Ali Road. Three more will be installed soon to record the ground situation and illegal structures. A monitoring centre for the City Zone area has been set up at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to detect illegal constructions.
