LONDON: Fabio Capello said becoming the manager of the England national team was a “dream come true” as he gave his first news conference here on Monday since being appointed. “I am very proud and honoured to be the England manager. I have wanted this job for a long time,” Capello said in English before taking questions in Italian via a translator. “It’s an honour to be the coach, and it’s a dream come true... I am convinced this is a great team and can go right to the top,” added Capello, who said he hoped to speak English in a month. No guaranteeHis first match in charge will be a friendly against Switzerland at Wembley on February 6. Asked whether he would keep John Terry as captain or give David Beckham his 100th international appearance against Switzerland, he declined to give any assurances. “I had a thorny relationship with Beckham at Madrid but he showed himself to be a great player and a great man,” Capello said. “I think Beckham, when he sets himself something, he will achieve it. But I will have to make choices. I believe that Beckham is an important player for England and I will take him in serious consideration.” — Agencies
