Quite a handy gift
DOCTORS’ GIFT: Kumaran recuperating after his hand was surgically re-joined recently.
Kumaran is a happy man now. A victim of political violence, the 46-year-old native of New Mahe got his severed hand back, literally. He was brought to the Baby Memorial Hospital at Kozhikode on November 5, with this left wrist cut off. His hand was also brought in a plastic cover.
Kumaran was rushed to the operation theatre. A team of plastic surgeons, under chief surgeon K. Krishna Kumar performed the surgery which lasted 14 hours. The hand was back in place.
“Now I have to undergo physiotherapy. After a few days of exercise I will be able to move the hand freely. I never thought I could get my hand back,” says a relieved Kumaran.
Time is the key
Dr. Krishna Kumar says that the surgically re-joined hand would have about 80 to 90 per cent efficiency of a normal hand.
“Our team including Sibi, Senthil and Sheeja could successfully perform the surgery only because he was brought within eight hours of the accident. Kumaran should be able to make normal use of his hand in two to three months,” says Dr. Krishna Kumar.
