THENI: Despite moderate showers that lashed the district since Tuesday morning, the storage level in Periyar and Vaigai dams, major drinking water and irrigation sources for five southern districts, has been plummeting day-by-day, thanks to huge withdrawal and poor inflow into these dams.

In the Periyar dam, the storage level has been slashed to 124.6 feet on Tuesday when compared to 124.9 feet on the previous day.

Similarly, the Vagai dam has witnessed a marginal slump in storage as water level stood at 57.94 feet, compared to 58.07 feet on Monday.

Discharge from the Periyar dam was more than double the quantum of inflow into the dam and withdrawal from Vaigai dam was almost equal to the quantum of inflow.

Public Works Department officials have started discharging 1,201 cusecs from the Periyar dam – approximately 600 cusecs through giant pipes and the rest through the Iraichal bridge. Tourists were advised not to take bath or go near the waterfalls near the Iraichal bridge.

Total storage level in Periyar dam is 3,539 mcft and the Vaigai dam has 3,218 mcft.

Inflow into Vaigai dam was 1,036 cusecs, which was 1,144 cusecs on Monday.

Dindigul

Incessant rain hit routine life in Dindigul, Palani, Batlagundu, Oddanchatram and other towns in the district. Schoolchildren had a tough time attending half yearly examinations.

Pilgrims from other States have been stranded at Palani, owing to heavy rain. Braving it, devotees had waited for hours at the winch station and at the hill temple for darshan of Sri Dhandayuthapaniswamy.

Sivaganga

Normal life was paralysed in the district owing to heavy rain that lashed several parts of the district on Tuesday.

Sivaganga, Karaikudi and Devakottai received good rain. Low-lying areas were inundated.

With no sign of respite in the rain, most of the schools declared half a day holiday in the afternoon on Tuesday.
