BERHAMPUR: The seasonal anchorage port at Gopalpur became functional for cargo handling for the current session on Tuesday. A ship from Vietnam assigned to export around 6,000 tons of mineral cargo from the Orissa Sands Complex (OSCOM) of the Indian Rare Earths’ Limited (IREL) to France is now anchored near the port. Using large barges cargo was being loaded to the ship. The IREL has decided to export around 1,30,000 tons of its mineral cargo through this anchorage port. A second vessel to export 56,000 tons of cargo of the IREL to Norway would reach the port on Dec 24. In January another vessel would come over to carry rest of the cargo of the IREL to its export destination. Variety of cargoOne of the directors of the GPL M. M. Moharana said this year a variety of cargo would be handled at this port. According to him, the seasonal anchorage port would handle around 4.5 lakh tons of cargo this year. It would involve export as well as import. He said around 60,000 tons of iron ore would be exported through the Gopalpur port. It is the second consecutive year for the port to be operational under its new management, Gopalpur Ports Limited (GPL). Since its inception in 1987, this port had been managed by the State Government till it was taken over by the GPL two years ago for its development into an all-weather port with an investment of more than Rs. 1,700 crores. The GPL happens to be a consortium of Orissa Stevedores Ltd. (OSL), Noble Group Ltd. of Hong Kong and Sara International Ltd., which entered into an MoU with the Orissa Government to take over the Gopalpur port to develop it into a major all-weather port on Build-Operate-Own-Share-Transfer (BOOST) basis.
