NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday cleared a package of Rs. 634 crore for improving rural roads in Karnataka under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) under its Bharat Nirman Programme. The package covers 313 projects totalling 2,450 km. It was cleared by the empowered committee for the PMGSY Scheme under the chairmanship of the Secretary of the Union Ministry of Rural Development, Subas Pani. Announcing the decision, the Karnataka Principal Secretary for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, K. Jairaj, said the contracts for the projects would be finalised over the next six to seven months and the construction work would begin by July. The projects would be completed within 18 months of their commencement. Calling it the largest allocation for Karnataka under PMGSY ever since it was started in 2002, he said so far, improvement works for 6,176 km had been sanctioned under the scheme and of that, work on 3,400 km had been completed and the rest would be completed by July. So far, an expenditure of Rs. 704 crore have been incurred.
