dated December 19, 1957: Buckingham canal

A scheme to improve the Buckingham Canal and thereby the inland waterways in Andhra and Madras is being considered by the Government of India, it is gathered. The scheme which is expected to cost nearly Rs. 1.25 crores will be sponsored jointly by the Andhra Pradesh and Madras Governments. The Buckingham Canal runs for about 160 miles in the Andhra territory while its stretch from the Andhra border to Madras is about 40 miles. A discussion about the details of this project was understood to have taken place at the State-level recently and the Central Government have been informed about the estimated expenditure. On the Andhra side, it is said that the depth of the canal will be maintained at six feet so as to allow an easy passage for 100-ton vessels. If the depth is to be greater, it might amount to altering the existing locks numbering about 14.
