Thiruvananthapuram: Over 500 personnel of the Kerala Police who had gone to Gujarat for providing security in the just-concluded Assembly elections have been stranded in the State following the delay of the authorities in arranging special trains for their return home. The team, comprising a Superintendent of Police, a Deputy Commandant, five Dy.SPs, five Circle Inspectors, 25 sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors and 480 constables, are now in Godhra. The policemen are mainly from the Armed Reserve and Special Armed Police. The contingent had left the State on a special train on December 3. ‘The misery started with the second phase of the polls getting over on Sunday. We were put up in a school at Godhra. There was pressure since Monday to get us vacated,” an official in the team told The Hindu over telephone. With students and local people coming and pleading that their examinations are in January, the team was forced to vacate the school on Tuesday to enable the functioning of the educational institution. A local inspector of the Gujarat Police helped the Kerala police personnel to get accommodation in a reserve camp and transportation. When contacted, Railway sources said the force should have ensured the return journey also before leaving from here to Gujarat.
