A challenge

The audacious jailbreak in the Dantewada prison of Chhattisgarh is a wake-up call to all the States to tighten security in jails. One wonders how almost 300 inmates could flee in just 15 minutes. Without the active cooperation and collusion of insiders, the escape would not have materialised. When the rifle of a guard was snatched, why did the other guards not open fire? The highly shameful incident throws a challenge to civilised society and the rule of law. What was the mode of transport the inmates used for fleeing? Had the authorities acted quickly, it would not have been difficult to capture them, given the huge number. The Chief Minister must resign owning moral responsibility for the episode.

The incident has once again exposed the precarious security scenario in the country. That the Chhattisgarh government failed to learn from similar incidents in the past is a grim reminder of the times we live in. It is time to find a permanent solution to the naxalite menace, which remains one of the biggest threats to our internal security. Governments of all affected States must come together to find a lasting and comprehensive solution. The masses should also be weaned away from the lure of the gun by rapid development of the backward districts.

G. Anirudh,

The jailbreak looks like a desperate attempt by Maoists and their sympathisers to make their presence felt and mobilise large numbers in stealth. Measures to recapture all those who have escaped should be taken without harming innocent villagers in the area.

K.S. Thampi,

Chennai
