Corrections and clarifications

The fifth paragraph in a report “Range of ballistic missiles to be improved” (December 13, 2007) was: “India says it has begun production of the 700-km Agni-I and the 2,500-km Agni II after development work and tests that lasted over a decade. A test of the longer range Agni-III, earlier this year, ended in failure.” It was an error. The test conducted this year was a success. It was last year’s test, in July, which ended in failure.

In a report “Classical tag for Kannada in two months: Moily” (Karnataka edition – Bangalore, December 14, 2007, page 5), the fifth paragraph was: “The State [Karnataka] did not adopt any resolution to seek classical status for Kannada when it held the Vishwa Kannada Sammelan in 1989. On the contrary, Tamil Nadu Government, then headed by the late M.G. Ramachandran, adopted a resolution to that effect at the World Tamil convention held in 1998, he [Chairman of the Central Administrative Reforms Commission and former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily] said.” The Bangalore Bureau clarifies that while this was exactly what was said at the meet, the correspondent made an error in not checking the fact that the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran had passed away on December 24, 1987. The Hindu, issue dated January 5, 1981, page 1, in a report titled “World Tamil Sangam Soon”, says that MGR did express such a sentiment. (This report was on the fifth World Tamil conference at Madurai.) The Tamil Nadu Government website, under the heading “Tamil development – Culture, Policy Note 2002-2003, says that former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in her address at the Eight World Tamil Conference in 1995 said that MGR declared the point “Tamil everywhere and Tamil in every sphere” at the 1981 conference.

The caption of the accompanying AP photograph in a report “Thai General to accept poll verdict” (“International” page, December 16, 2007) was “Sonthi Boonyaratglin vores in Bangkok on Saturday.” It should have been “votes”. (Gen Sonthi is the first member of Thailand’s Muslim minority to head the army.)

A Ted Corbett report “Third Test in conditions far from perfect” (“Sport”, December 18, 2007) gave the umpires for the Third Test between Sri Lanka and England as “Asad Rauf and Aleem Dar (both Pakistan)”. It was a reporting error, and should have been Asad Rauf and Darryl Harper.

It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
