Headline-grabbing gimmick: British Opposition

Hasan Surror

LONDON: The Opposition Conservative Party in Britain, which wants an annual cap on immigration, dismissed the new visa proposals of the government as a “headline-grabbing gimmick” intended to distract attention from the Labour’s political difficulties that have seen its ratings slump to a new low.

The proposals, announced on Tuesday, are part of a wider shake-up of the immigration regime aimed at restricting entry from outside the EU to highly-skilled professionals such as IT personnel and those working in high finances and business.

Under an Australian- points system, applicants will be judged on the basis of qualifications, income and their potential to contribute to the British economy. Low and unskilled workers will not be allowed to come and work in Britain, affecting hundreds of potential migrants from the Indian subcontinent.
