PCC chief’s appointment soon, says VHR

HYDERABAD: Rajya Sabha member V. Hanumantha Rao has said that the new Pradesh Congress Committee president will be appointed shortly.

Mr. Rao told reporters after meeting Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday that AICC general secretary Veerappa Moily had assured him that vacancies in various government-owned corporations and boards would be filled immediately after the PCC chief’s appointment. He said the delay in naming the PCC chief would not affect the party’s programmes.

Asked about his silence on the Telangana issue of late, Mr. Rao said he had always spoken out. “I had clearly told the party leadership that there was a strong sentiment in favour of Telangana statehood.” Even though a majority of Congress leaders from the region were against an alliance with the TRS, the AICC chief had decided in favour of the tie-up.

Appreciating the Rs. 2-a-kg rice scheme, Mr. Rao said it would be better if the government enhanced the old-age pension. To a question, he said Dr. Reddy had seen the need for Rs. 2-a-kg rice supply, while a former Congress Chief Minister felt it was not necessary during his regime.
