More rain forecast in coastal regions

T. Ramakrishnan

CHENNAI: Many places in the coastal belt of the State experienced persistent rainfall since Monday night and the Meteorological office on Tuesday forecast rainfall over most places of the coastal region for the next two days.

Attributing the rainfall to a trough of low pressure over Sri Lanka and the adjoining southwest bay of Tamil Nadu, the office said many places in the interior regions of the State would also receive rain. “Isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 48 hours,” a bulletin issued by the office said.

During the 24-hour-period that ended at 8-30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sirkali recorded 12 cm, Mayiladuthurai – 11 cm, Parangipettai - 9 cm, Nannilam and Chidambaram – 8 cm each and Tiruvarur, Karaikal (in the Union Territory of Puducherry) and – Vallam 7 cm each. Cuddalore received 6 cm, Kattumannarkoil, Puducherry, Pattukottai and Tiruvidaimaruthur registered 5 cm each. Sriperumbudur, Adiramapattinam, Kumbakonam, Orathanadu, Kodavasal, Mannargudi and Needamangalam recorded 4 cm each. Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam were among those areas which received 3 cm each.

As there will be strong onshore winds from north-easterly to easterly with speed occasionally reaching 50 to 60 kmph along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea..

Of the four observatories (Nungambakkam, Meenambakkam, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam) that normally record high rainfall during October-December, Nagapattinam comes on top with 84 cm, a shortfall of one cm. Cuddalore has received 76 cm, a deviation of minus 5 cm.

While Nungambakkam has recorded 47 cm with a shortfall of 25 cm, Meenambakkam has registered 42 cm, a deviation of 32 cm.
