PUDUCHERRY: The wooden floor of the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Uppalam has been polished enough to reflect the lights. The stadium is being spruced up to organise the 58th Senior National Basketball Championship, which would be held from December 21 at two venues – the stadium and Petit Seminaire Primary School grounds in Uppalam. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Father M.S. John Bosco, organising secretary, said a total of 900 sportspersons – 27 state men’s teams and 24 state women’s teams – from 27 States, the Services and Railways would be participating in the event, which will go on till December 28. This would be the first time that three men will officiate the matches. The matches scheduled to be held on December 21 would be held on the Pondicherry Engineering College grounds from 7 a.m. onwards. The formal inauguration of the event would be held on the evening of December 22 at the Indira Gandhi stadium. Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao, Assembly Speaker R. Radhakrishnan and MLA A. Anbalagan will participate in the function. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will preside over the valedictory event. Father John Bosco further said that Puducherry has hosted the national event 10 times till date, and that the national team would be chosen at the national games here. “The members of the selection committee would be here for the purpose,” he added. The Pondicherry State Sports Council has given Rs. 1 lakh for the event, which is being organised by the Pondicherry Basketball Association under the auspices of the Pondicherry State Sports Council and Basketball Federation of India and co-sponsored by the Jeppiar Group of Educational Institutions.
