Bureaucracy coming in way of Belgaum’s development: vedike

Staff Correspondent

Suspension of Urban Development Secretary demanded

Belgaum: Activists of Kannada Rakshana Vedike on Wednesday staged a protest against the Department of Urban Development and its Secretary Subash Chandra condemning the alleged “red tapism” in the development of Belgaum.

The protest was led by vedike’s district unit president Rajeev Topannavar.

The protesters staged a “rasta roko” at the Rani Chennamma Circle here and burnt an effigy of Mr. Chandra. They later submitted a memorandum addressed to the Governor to an official at the office of Deputy Commissioner demanding immediate suspension of Mr. Chandra.

In the memorandum, the vedike said that though the Government had accorded priority to the border city and announced several development projects, none of them were being implemented owing to bureaucratic delays.

Ring road

One of the ambitious projects was construction of an outer ring road in Belgaum. The Government had cleared the Rs. 151-crore project on BOT basis and issued work order to a contractor, but no work had been taken up so far, it said.

The vedike alleged that Mr. Chandra had ordered for fresh tenders after the process of awarding the contract was completed, giving scope for doubts.

The Governor should look into the issue and ensure that bureaucrats did not put any hurdles in such development projects, it said.

It said that Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, and information technology and apparel parks still remained as dream for the local people.
