Land for the centre identified near Kelagote Awareness to be created on need to shun belief in superstitions Chitradurga: The district administration has drafted a proposal for setting up a sub-regional science centre here. Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas, who has taken the initiative, told The Hindu that the estimated cost of the project was around Rs. 2 crore. The proposal would be submitted to the Department of Science and Technology for approval. He said seven acres of land had been identified near the Kelagote area of the city for the centre. “Since the land belongs to the Department of Higher Education, I have asked officials to have it allotted for the purpose. I hope permission would be obtained,” he said. Mr. Biswas said it was imperative for the district to have a science centre for students. He said the centre would consist of a sophisticated laboratory for scientific experimentation, a comprehensive library for reference, a planetarium and a bio-park. In addition to these aspects, Mr. Biswas said he wanted to introduce other sections such as a centre for human physiology, for which he said he had discussed modalities with officials of the Basaveshwara Medical College. Preparation of model windmills would also be undertaken to educate students on their functioning, as the district was known for production of wind power. Miniature structures of mines would also be set up at the centre, he said. A mobile laboratory may also be introduced, he said, and added that it would have sophisticated machinery. This was meant to create awareness among students from rural areas, who otherwise would not get the opportunity to visit the centre. Street programmesMr. Biswas also said street programmes would be held to educate people on the need to shun belief in superstitions.
