Protest against attempts to ‘saffronise’ hill shrine

Correspondent

CHIKMAGALUR: Members of the Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike and the Sunni Students Federation took out a procession here on Wednesday to protest against the alleged attempts of the Sangh Parivar to “saffronise” the shrine on Bababudangiri which they claimed was a centre for Sufi traditions.

They held dharna in front of the district offices.

K.L. Ashok, secretary of the vedike, and Puttaswamy and Gouse Mohiddin, joint secretaries, who addressed them, said the hidden agenda of the Sangh Parivar was to gain political advantage by provoking religious sentiments.

Reiterating that they would not allow Bababudangiri to become another Ayodhya, they expressed dissatisfaction with the district administration for not following the status quo order issued by the high court, and allegedly allowing the Sangh Parivar to start new programmes and create new documents.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur district, they wanted the authorities to ban Datta Jayanti celebrations and Shoba Yatra, and prevent BJP and Bajrang Dal leaders from participating in the programmes connected with Bababudangiri.

Earlier, Bajrang Dal activists took out a motorcycle jatha through the main streets of Chikmagalur.
