Concerted efforts sought to improve civic amenities in Hospet

Staff Correspondent

Non-payment of water cess is on the rise

Lack of underground drainage system causing difficulties

HOSPET: Better coordination between urban local bodies (ULBs), officials and the people would ensure improvement in the delivery of services such as drinking water and sanitation, speakers said at a workshop on “Stakeholders engagement for service delivery improvement in water and sanitation”. The programme was held here on Wednesday.

Arvind Kulkarni, an employee of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), said that the workshop had been organised by the Hyderabad-based Samaj Vikas Development Support Organisation to create awareness among the people on the need to ensure improvement in the delivery of basic necessities.

Elected representatives from the Hospet City Municipal Council, representatives of various NGOs, prominent citizens and presspersons participated in the programme. The speakers said that the lack of coordination among different departments of the ULBs, improper supply of water in certain areas, despite the fact that the city was located near the Tungabhadra river, lack of underground drainage and an improper disposal system were among other problems faced by them. Chidananda, a councillor, while endorsing the views expressed, pointed out that the people themselves were largely responsible for not taking adequate care of civic infrastructure and asked them not to complain constantly of administrative apathy.

“Without verifying details of infrastructure provided, people should not purchase land and then blame officials.” Non-payment of water cess was also on the rise, he said, and questioned their right to demand developed facilities.
