Illegal compound wall blocks approach road

AMBUR: An unauthorised construction of a compound wall near a closed leather unit forces four hundred Adi Dravidar families of Mangalapuram and Azhagapuri at Ambur in Vellore to trek an extra km to reach Ambur town.

Residents say the wall has blocked the approach road to the by-pass road.

The residents, especially those going to work, had used the approach road for more than 60 years.

This is the shortest route to the town, as the by-pass road was just 200 metres from the approach road.

S. Kotteswaran of the Ambur town Student Congress says he, together with other party workers, has sent a letter to the Chief Minister and the Collector urging demolition of the wall.

The municipality, too, is aware of the problem, yet it is yet to act, he says.

Town Student Congress president Shanmugam alleges says a private person had built the 200- metre-high wall, encroaching upon a huge area, which, he claims, is being sold as plots. But enquiries with the municipality reveal that the plots have not been approved.

R. Rajesh of the Pernambut Student Congress says the children used the approach road to go to school on Umar Road.

With the wall blocking it now, students have to cross the rail track or take a detour to go to school.

Mr. Rajesh says he and the Town Student Congress president have planned to meet the Collector again.

The Congress has also warned of an agitation, if the Collector fails take action.
