SALEM: Children’s creative spirit came to the fore on environment issues in the month-long Salem Steel Plant’s ‘Environment Month’ celebrations, which concluded here on Tuesday. Addressing the valedictory function, Executive Director of SSP, B.B. Singh pointed out that along with industrialisation, efforts to optimally utilise the limited resources to preserve the fragile planet and its eco-system also should be undertaken. He elaborated on the measures taken by SSP, the first SAIL unit to be certified ISO 14001 in 1999 for its pollution control and environment protection. Dr. R. Nagendran, Professor, Centre for Environmental Studies, Anna University, gave a lecture on ‘Integrated approach the need of the hour to understand our environment better’. He stressed the need for understanding the environment first in its multi-dimensional perspective and then to develop and execute management strategies. He also explained the law of ecology stating that nothing had come from nowhere and everything coming from somewhere. Slogan writingSlogan writing competition for Salem Steel Plant employees, besides drawing and quiz competitions for school children were organised as part of the celebrations. Senior officials, including A Periathambi, GM (Works), T.K. Mazumdar, GM (P&A) and B. Vijayaraghavan, GM (HRM & Maintenance), participated.
