BSNL staff oppose disinvestment move

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. Employees’ Union is opposed to any move towards disinvestment of the organisation, according to S. Chellappa, state secretary of the union.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Chellappa said the Central government’s policy and private competition had been posing a threat to the BSNL.

The union was urging the government to infuse new life into the organisation by suitably modifying its policy so as to enable it to maintain its supremacy in the field of telecommunications. In terms of cellphone connections, the BSNL stands third, next to Airtel and Vodafone. Of the 81 lakh connections given across the country in August, BSNL’s share was only 5.8 lakh. This was mainly because of the SIM card shortage that the BSNL has been facing for the past eight months. Only through the procurement of modern equipment can the problem be tackled.
