CHENNAI: There is no change in the position that no confidence motions cannot be brought against chairpersons of village panchayats in view of their direct election, according to Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin. Explaining the present legal position on no-trust motions against chairpersons of district panchayats and panchayat unions and vice-chairpersons of village panchayats, panchayat unions and district panchayats, Mr. Stalin said 60 per cent of the total strength of the local bodies concerned should have proposed the motion against the earlier stipulation of 50 per cent. For adopting the motions, the support of 80 per cent of the members was required. Besides, the motions could not be brought in within one year of the office-bearers assuming office and when the tenure was to end in a year. Prior to the promulgation of an ordinance in this regard, the motions that were passed and were pending clearance from authorities were deemed null and void, the Minister said, adding that the ordinance was issued a week ago.
