Government told to stick to norms High Court Round-Up

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday ordered that the government or any of the universities in the State should not start any college or department or course without providing for meeting the requirements of all statutory and mandatory norms of the UGC, AICTE, Medical Council of India, and Dental Council of India.

Justice S. Siri Jagan passed the order while directing the State government to give its concurrence for appointing a professor, two assistant professors, and six lecturers in the School of Management and Business Studies under Mahatma Gandhi University.

The court asked the government to pass the order within one month.

If the government did not pass any orders in one month, it could be presumed that the concurrence had been given and the department could complete the process of appointment in the permanent vacancies in the school, the court ordered.

Sabarimala situation

A Bench comprising Justice K.S. Radhakrishan and Justice T.R. Ramachandran Nair directed the State Pollution Control Board to file a report regarding the present situation at Pampa and Sannidhanam.

The court issued the direction while initiating suo motu proceedings on the report that there was no proper coordination among various government departments and the board for effective administration of temples under the Sabarimala group. The court said that the State government and the board had an obligation to provide basic facilities to devotees at Sabarimala.

The rights to rest, drinking water, and toilet facilities were Fundamental Rights. The Pollution Control Board should ensure that Pampa and Bhasmakulam were free of pollution.
