Andhra Pradesh
Medak district has 1.72 lakh farm connections, ryots yet to pay Rs. 11.3 crore Farmers to be offered instalment option to pay arrears on individual basis Sangareddy: Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company limited (APCPDCL) Medak circle which has accumulated arrears of Rs. 126 crore has started disconnecting power supply to defaulters under three major categories including agriculture. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday Superintendent Engineer Y. Narender Reddy said that district has 1.72 lakh agricultural connections and the farmers have yet to pay Rs. 11.3 crore. Narender Reddy said that disconnecting farm supplies had begun already in Ramaipalli, Kukunoorpally and Patancheru areas amid protests from farmers. He said that the company has deliberately chosen harvesting time for collection of arrears to lessen the burden on the farmers. Tailor made solutionsHowever, the SE said that the farmers would be treated individually and offered an instalment plan based on his bill paying record and financial position. The farmers who have both domestic and farm connections would here afterwards receive clubbed bills and any payment they make towards that particular bill would be first adjusted towards the pending farm bill. Mandatory chargesThe farmers who come under the free power category have to pay monthly customer charges of Rs. 20 as there would be no exemption in this. He made it clear that even SC and ST consumers have to comply with the Rs. 20 per month regulation but the arrears up to July 31 this year have been waived. He said that the collection of customer charge from farmers has become inevitable, to keep the connection between the power supplier and the farmer intact. The SE said that the distributing firm would give priority in development to constituencies that encourage farmers to pay their arrears. The APCPCDL also decided to seek the help of the district collector in the collection of power bill arrears from government offices.
