Central varsity seeks land for multi-campus

G. Krishnakumar

EFLU in talks with government for 100 acres of land

Project estimated to cost Rs.50 crore

Focus on five-year postgraduate courses

KOCHI: The Hyderabad-based English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), the erstwhile Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, has asked the State government to provide 100 acres of land to set up its full-fledged multi-campus in the State.

The EFLU authorities have written to the Higher Education Department and are expecting a positive reply.

Vice-Chancellor Abhai Maurya told The Hindu over telephone from Hyderabad that the university was looking for 100 acres in a rural setting with access to National Highway. The entire infrastructure required for the campus would be set up by the EFLU. The initial cost of the project is estimated at Rs. 50 crore, he said.

If the project is implemented, the multi-campus will be the third centre of the EFLU outside Hyderabad. Besides the main campus in Hyderabad, it currently has two regional centres in Shillong and Lucknow. Every year, hundreds of students from Kerala apply for various programmes offered by the university. Admission is on the basis of a nation-wide test held at several centres.

Terming the proposed project in Kerala, as a replica of the central campus in Hyderabad, Prof. Maurya said the centre would offer all major programmes being offered by the EFLU on its main campus. The focus would be on five-year integrated postgraduate courses, along with other programmes in foreign languages, he said.

The EFLU authorities said the proposed multi-campus in Kerala would focus on disseminating instructional, research and extension facilities in the teaching of English and foreign languages and literature in the country. It will also take appropriate measures for inter-disciplinary studies and research in literary and cultural studies and develop critical intercultural under standing of civilizations.

The EFLU is a Central University established by an Act of Parliament on August 3, 2007. It is the only university in India devoted exclusively to the study of English and foreign languages.

The Kerala Government had sent a request to the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development expressing its interest in setting up the multi-campus of EFLU. The MHRD later forwarded the letter to the EFLU authorities for follow-up action. If the State government accepts the proposal for providing the land, the EFLU authorities would present the proposal before a Central committee that will visit the Hyderabad campus to discuss various projects submitted by the university for consideration under the Eleventh Five Year Plan Programme.
