dated December 20, 1957: Official language

Reiterating his plea for maintaining the status quo on the continuance of English as the official language of the Union Government, Mr. C. Rajagopalachari said in Madras that the present was not the time to take up the language question when there were so many other urgent calls on national energy and unity. Mr. Rajagopalachari who was speaking on December 18 at the YMCA Esplanade in Madras, under the auspices of the Business and Professional Men’s Club, pointed out that the feelings and difficulties of non-Hindi people had not been taken into account by those who persisted that Hindi should be made the official language of the Indian Union. The old established ideas that a nation should speak one language, should have one religion and should have one set of domestic customs could not be applied to India, he said. So far as language in a general sense was concerned, they had in India quite a number of good and beautiful languages. But the problem was that all the people of India speaking different languages formed one nation.
