SINGAPORE: The Malaysian government is considering the idea of setting up a committee for non-Muslim affairs. This has been indicated by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The response from the government acquires importance in the aftermath of a rally organised by the Hindu Rights Action Force in Kuala Lumpur on November 25 and the subsequent detention of five Hindraf leaders, without trial, under Malaysia’s tough Internal Security Act (ISA). Hindraf organised the rally to focus attention on the alleged “discrimination” against ethnic Indians. The question of conversions to Islam in multi-religious and Muslim-majority Malaysia was also raised by the Indian-origin and ethnic-Chinese minorities several months prior to the rally. Hindraf’s new Coordinator Thanenthiran told The Hindu from Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday that the group would extend greetings to the Muslim majority on the occasion of Id.
