Inflow up in major dams

THENI: Inflow into Periyar and Vagai dams has increased sharply, thanks to heavy downpour in the catchments as well as on the dam site on Tuesday night. The district witnessed torrential showers on Wednesday also. Low-lying areas were flooded.
Goodalur received highest rainfall in the district and Veerapandi recorded the lowest rain.
Water level stood at 124.90 feet with an inflow of 1,894 cusecs. Discharge from the dam was 1,196 cusecs. There was flash flood in Kottakudi and Mullaperiyar and Vaigai rivers.
However, officials alerted people residing near the banks of these rivers to move on to high ridge areas.
Inflow has increased to 2,323 cusecs in Vaigai Dam. Storage level stood at 58.8 feet. Public Works Department officials discharged 41 cusecs from the dam to maintain drinking water supply to Madurai city.
Rainfall recorded at various places in mm: Periyar 71, Thekkadi 107, Goodalur 112, Palayam 90, Shanmuga River Dam 35, Veerapandi 71 mm and Vaigai 112.
