“No revenue loss due to NIAM tie-up”
|
The university has earned Rs.5.5 crore: Vice-Chancellor
|
MADURAI: Madurai Kamaraj University Vice-Chancellor P. Maruthamuthu on Tuesday refuted the charge that the varsity had suffered monetary loss because of revenue-sharing agreement with the National Institute of Applied Management (NIAM).
“In fact, the university has earned Rs.5.5 crore in the past two years by offering business management courses at various centres in the country through this tie-up. The expenditure incurred by MKU is nil and the agreement was signed only after obtaining the Syndicate’s approval,” he told reporters here on Tuesday.
The Vice-Chancellor was responding to a demand made by the Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Alagappa and Mother Teresa University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) general secretary S. Vivekanandan, seeking a probe into the agreement.
Stating that the university was earning substantial revenue from this agreement, Dr. Maruthamuthu said that the revenue share of 25 per cent was good because the university was not incurring any expenditure and at the same time offering career-oriented MBA/BBA (industry integrated) courses. The course fee share of Rs.5.5 crore earned so far had been deposited in the university account, he added.
He also denied the charge that there was no proper approval for offering this course. “The MBA (Industry Integrated) programme is offered directly by the university and not franchised to NIAM. This has been informed to the University Grants Commission and the approval of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is not required in this case,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
P. R. Athappan, Dean (Industrial Consultancy), MKU, said that NIAM was only a nodal agency for identifying institutions to offer practical training to students even though there was no financial commitment on the part of the university.
