Income Tax Department watching dacoity case
L. Srikrishna
CHENNAI: Even as police investigate the dacoity that took place in suburban Mangadu in the early hours of Monday, the Department of Income Tax is closely watching the progress in the case, reliable sources said here on Tuesday.
Following media reports about an armed gang decamping with cash and gold jewellery worth over Rs.50 lakh, the Income Tax authorities are monitoring the case.
A senior officer in the department told The Hindu that “we are pursuing the case” from the perspective of source of funds and possible tax evasion.
Family questioned
For the second day, police questioned the family members and a few “known persons” whom they suspect to be behind the crime.
According to an investigation officer, one of the gang members had specifically asked Lakshmibai, wife of Srinivasa Reddy, to fetch the diamonds from the almirah, which she used to wear with her ‘mangalsutra’.
Similarly, another person had asked Mr Reddy about Rs 20 lakh that he had withdrawn from the bank a week ago. These specific queries were indicators that some one close to Mr Reddy or his family had provided information to the gang members.
The role of a professional gang in the dacoity is not ruled out, the officer added.
Based on the fingerprints lifted from the scene of crime, a special team is on the look out for the gang members.
Going by the details about the gang members, police showed the family members a few photographs for tracking the suspects, officers said.
Another officer said that under the cover of darkness, the seven-member gang walked for some distance and later, got into a waiting vehicle.
Whether some one had noted the vehicle’s registration number is being probed.
Internal inquiries are also being conducted by senior police officers with the night patrol team members in the area.
A senior officer said that though there were different leads in the case, “we are yet to break through, but are hopeful to nab the accused soon”.
