TIRUCHI: Intermittent rain pounded Tiruchi for the second day on Wednesday leaving several low-lying areas in the city inundated.

The district received an average of 152.34 mm in the last 24 hours, paralysing normal life. Paddy, banana and sugarcane fields were inundated in several parts of the district, but no major damage was reported.

Residents in the flood-prone colonies of the city spent an anxious day watching the water level on the streets and the Kudamuritti and the Koraiyar. Some of the residential colonies off Vayalur Road, Kuzhumani Road, Dindigul Road and Woraiyur had knee deep water.

There was no flooding inside houses. Some residents, however, preferred to move to safer places, while others shifted their belongings to the upper floors of their houses.

Public Works Department officials told The Hindu that there were no major breaches in rivers or tanks. Though the region received very heavy rain, akin to the flood situation in November 2005, the situation was manageable as the discharge in the Cauvery from the Mettur reservoir was negligible. This helped the draining of surplus flow from the Ariyar, the Koraiyar and other jungle streams into the river quickly. Surplus waters from the Punganur tank also drained through the Kudamuritti.

On Wednesday afternoon, over 10,000 cusecs of water from the two rivers and the tank flowed into the Kudamuritti, which cuts across the city, from the Puthur weir. The discharge came down by evening after a let up in the rain. The water overflowed into some of the residential colonies from the left flank of the Kudamuritti, a contour canal without a bund on this side. Streets in M.M. Nagar, Uyyakondan Thirumalai and Somarasampettai were inundated. The overflow left knee-deep water in colonies beyond the Vekkalliamman Temple near Woraiyur, including Fathima Nagar, Beschi Nagar and Linga Nagar, on Kuzhumani Road. Traffic on Tiruchi-Chennai Bypass Road was badly affected due to inundation near the Palpannai Traffic Island. Many arterial roads within the city were also water-logged.

The realisation at Grand Anaicut was 16,740 cusecs on Wednesday afternoon. PWD officials expect the realisation to go up to 30,000 to 40,000 cusecs on Thursday due to the surplus flow from Varadhamananidhi, Palar, Parathalar, Kuthiraiyar and Kudaganar.

During the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, Inungur on the Tiruchi-Karur border recorded a maximum of 335 mm of rainfall.

The chief amount of rainfall recorded in major centres across Tiruchi district during the same period was as follows (in mm): Sirugudi 77; Devimangalam 123; Nandiyar 151; Pulianjolai 150.2; Tiruchi Airport 172.6; Manapparai 196.2; Vathalai 210; Pulivalam 130; Samayapuram 140.80; Kallakudi 151.2; Golden Rock 189; Ponnaniyaru 177.4; Navalurkuttapattu 210; Tiruchi Junction 206; Tiruchi Town 197.4; Lalgudi 153; Musiri 201; Kovilpatti 115.2; Thuraiyur 92; Koppampatti 90; Marungapuri 95.4 and Thathiyengarpet 123.
