Child killed in torrential rain in Dindigul

40 houses marooned, standing crops inundated, landslip on ghat road

DINDIGUL: One child was killed, several houses were inundated, irrigation tanks breached and trees uprooted owing to torrential rains that lashed the district for the past 24 hours. K. Rajeshwari (6) was killed on the spot when a tiled roof of her house collapsed at Kullagoundenkalam near Sukkampatti village in Vedasandur last night.

Over 40 houses including huts at Mettupatti, Thirumalaisamypuram, Vedapatti, Nallamanaickenpatti, Periyar Nagar and MGR Nagar were marooned and standing crops in hundreds of acres at several villages around Dindigul were inundated.

Royappanpatti village was plunged into darkness as a tree fell on an electric post, disrupting power supply. A large quantity of water from Paraikulam at Meenakshinaickenpatti drained into agriculture fields owing to a wide breach that developed in a bund.

Moongilkulam near Ponnimandurai Pudhupatti was overflowing.

Athoor and Palar dams have started overflowing and storage level reached its full capacity at Marudhanadhi and Manjalar dams. Total quantum of inflow has been discharged from Palar Porundhalar river. The compound wall of a school building at Sevugampatti collapsed.

Road link to 15 villages including Villpatti, Attuvampatti, Pallangi, Puliyur and Kovilpatti was snapped owing to landslips on upper Kodaikanal hill.

Landslip in seven places disrupted traffic on Palani-Kodaikanal Ghat Road also.
