Poor planning led to power cuts: Vaiko

Staff Reporter

Blames the State Government and Minister for Electricity for the problem

TIRUNELVELI: The State Government’s failure to anticipate the power requirement of the State, inadequate maintenance of existing power generation units, poor planning and administrative irregularities were the reasons behind the present blackout that haunts people from all walks of life for the past couple of months, the general secretary of MDMK, Vaiko, has alleged.

He was addressing protestors at a demonstration organised by the party at Vannarpet in Palayamkottai on Wednesday in protest against frequent power cut, fertilizer scarcity and demanding higher procurement price for paddy.

Mr. Vaiko said that even after AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa cautioned the State Government of possible power crisis in the later part of the year, Minister for Electricity Arcot N. Veeraswamy chose to ignore it and miserably failed in his duty of ensuring adequate power generation in the existing units and to initiate steps for purchase electricity from other States.

“Hence the minority DMK Government, headed by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, and Mr. Veeraswamy should be held responsible for this fiasco,” Mr. Vaiko said.

The MDMK general secretary also came down heavily on the State Government for failing to ensure adequate and unhindered supply of fertilizers in the right price to the farmers.

“Besides undeclared power cuts, fertilizer shortage and the low procurement price for paddy are two other major threats faced by the farming community. If the agriculturists cannot get the chemical nutrients within next 10 days, they will only get 50 per cent of the yield, which will certainly create a major crisis in the State,” he warned.
