Positive suggestion: Collector G. Prakash addressing the World AIDS Day function in Tirunelveli on Wednesday.

TIRUNELVELI: Misconceptions in the minds of the public about HIV/AIDS can be erased only through scientifically designed intense campaigns, the District Collector, G. Prakash, has said.

Addressing the World AIDS Day function held here on Wednesday, Mr. Prakash said that even after the society had undergone several far-reaching changes in the past couple of decades on all fronts, it still refused to openly discuss the issues pertaining to sex and other related problems.

If healthy discussions in this connection were allowed at various levels, the misconception about HIV / AIDS would be cleared.

“The mode of transmission of this dreadful disease should be explained clearly to the people since it will effectively check its spreading in the country. The taboo should go and opportunities should be given for adolescent boys and girls to know about HIV / AIDS. If the parents and others try to hide the truth from the younger generation it will certainly have a negative impact,” the Collector noted.

The Deputy Director, Health Services (Tuberculosis), C. Muthukumar, the Deputy Director, Medicine and Family Welfare, P. Nedunchezhiyan, and the Head, Department of Microbiology, Tirunelveli Medical College, K. Muthulakshmi, spoke. Farmhands and beedi rollers mobilised from the rural areas around Tirunelveli by the non-Governmental organisations attended the function.
