Rain havoc: Water stagnating in front of KVIC annual exhibition venue at Palayamkottai on Wednesday. TIRUNELVELI: After a brief lull, the district received significant rainfall on Tuesday night and Wednesday. The level at Papanasam dam, which stood at 119.80 feet on Tuesday, rose to 120.50 feet against its maximum capacity of 143 feet. The dam was receiving an inflow of 1,698 cusecs due to incessant rains on Wednesday and 749 cusecs was being discharged. The level is expected to increase further. Manimuthar dam, which failed to experience significant rainfall ever since the monsoon started, enjoyed a precipitation of 71 mm, which took the level from 90.50 feet to 93.40 feet. The sky remained overcast throughout the day and the intermittent drizzle and some rainfall in the afternoon cheered the farmers. All schools in the district remained closed following the order from the Department of School Education. All trains coming toand passing through Tirunelveli suffered a delay of nearly eight hours. While Nellai Super Fast Express Train reached Tirunelveli at 4.10 p.m. against the usual timing of 8.30 a.m., Kanyakumari Express Train entered Tirunelveli Junction at 1.15 p.m. against the normal timing of 4.30 a.m. The Thiruvananthapuram-bound Ananthapuri Express Train, which usually reaches Tirunelveli Juction at 7.30 a.m., arrived here at 3.09 p.m. “Since the train was stranded in a small village near Tiruchi after rainwater inundated the track, we could not get food for our children and it was a horrible experience,” said K. Murugan a passenger. Rainfall in the district (in mm): Adavinainar dam – 117.75, Shencottai – 78, Tenkasi – 65.30, Sivagiri – 65.20, Sankarankovil – 57.30, Gundar dam – 55, Gadana dam – 52, Radhapuram – 50, Ambasamudram – 40, Palayamkottai – 28.20, Nanguneri and Vadakku Pachchaiyar dam – 28, Alangulam – 17.34, Ramanadhi – 17, Nambiyar dam – 13.06 and Tirunelveli – 12.20. NagercoilVarious parts of the district received widespread rain on Wednesday there by bringing cheers to the farming community. A maximum rainfall of 38.6 mm was recorded at Kotare followed by 35.6 mm in Aralvoimozhi, 28.2 mm in Anima, 12.8 mm in Perunchani, 12.5 mm in Boothapandi and 12.4 mm in Puthen Dam. Educational institutions postponed the examination which was supposed to be held on Wednesday to January 2. The level in Pechipparai dam stood at 43.81 feet against its total capacity of 48 feet , 70.05 feet in Perunchani against the total capacity of 77 feet.
