67 per cent polling in Himachal
Special Correspondent
New Delhi: An estimated 67 per cent of nearly 44.77 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the second phase covering 65 constituencies in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday, the Deputy Election Commissioner, R. Balakrishnan, told reporters here.
The figure was likely to go up as information was awaited from many polling stations.
“The polling was peaceful and orderly and no major incident was reported,” he added.
Besides 40 general observers, 524 micro-observers had been posted inside the polling stations. Counting of votes would be held on December 23. On November 14, polling was held in three constituencies.
In the last Assembly elections, the polling was 74.5 per cent and in the Lok Sabha polls it was 59.71 per cent.
No decision on Sonia, Modi
The Election Commission is yet to take a decision on the replies sent by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in response to the show-cause notices sent to them for alleged violation of the model code, Mr. Balakrishnan informed. The full Commission on Wednesday discussed the issue and “the process of decision is still on,” he said.
While Mr. Modi was issued notice for his alleged remarks against Sohrabuddin Sheikh, who was killed in a fake encounter in 2005, the notice was slapped on Ms. Gandhi for her alleged “merchant of death” remarks.
