The council approved the upgradation of 16 categories of non-teaching posts

It also approved the syllabus for PG diploma in Yogic Sciences

MANGALORE: The Academic Council of Mangalore University has approved the syllabus for 22 M.Phil. courses.

Vice-Chancellor K.M. Kaveriappa, who presided over the meeting on Tuesday, said that the university would introduce both full-time and part-time M.Phil. courses for the benefit of students. The full-time courses would help those who have not passed their National Eligibility Test.

The council also gave its consent to consider job-oriented course (JOC) in banking, which is equivalent to the Pre-University Course. It will allow such students to pursue their study in BHM. Students who have passed JOC in sericulture too will be allowed to pursue BBM. The council also approved a statute regarding the upgradation of 16 categories of non-teaching posts in Mangalore University.

Apart from this, the “Draft statute governing the cadre and recruitment rules for the post of drivers, stenographer, and first division assistants in Mangalore University” was also approved in the meeting. The statutes will be sent to the Chancellor for the final approval before its implementation, Prof. Kaveriappa said. The meeting also approved the syllabus for postgraduate (PG) diploma in Yogic Sciences along with a revised syllabus for many PG courses.

The council also approved the institution of four gold medals for first rank holders in three PG courses and one gold medal in B.Com.

These include the Girisham gold medal for the student who scores the highest in PG course in Economics. The gold medal has been instituted by Prof. S. Giriappa and his research student Sheena, Prof. Kaveriappa said.

The first rank holder in PG course in history will receive the Dr. P. Gururaj Bhat gold medal. The medal has been instituted by P. Parameshwar Bhat in the memory of his father who was an eminent historian.

The first rank holder in PG course in commerce will receive the Shrimathi Lakshmi memorial gold medal instituted by G. Shankar of the Shankar Family Trust, Udupi.

B. Sudhakar Shetty from Mumbai has instituted the Shrimathi Rukmini Shetty Memorial Sudhakar Shetty gold medal for the first rank holder in B.Com examination.

For the institution of the gold medal, the donors have constituted an endowment trust by paying a sum of Rs. 50,000 each. Although there are 24 gold medals instituted in the name of various donors, many PG courses do not have gold medals. Prof. Kaveriappa said that the Shankar Family Trust had agreed to institute two more gold medals. He added that some of the gold medals were instituted 25 years ago.

“At that time the deposit given by the donors was between Rs. 10,000 to Rs 30,000. With that deposit, we were unable to hand over a gold medal. In such cases it was converted into a cash prize,” he added. K. Sundar Naik, Registrar, was present on the occasion.
