Showcasing India’s history

Staff Correspondent

Seminars, films, cultural programmes will be presented

Manipal: Honorary Director of the Manipal Institute of Communication M.V. Kamath has said that the Centre for Humanities, Manipal University, will present a series of seminars, films, cultural programmes and a gallery of pictures and paintings depicting India’s journey from 1857 to 2007. The event is titled “Bharatayan”.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Kamath said that former Union Minister Arun Shourie would inaugurate “Bharatayan” here on December 24.

“United we stand, divided we fall” is the theme of “Bharatayan”. Major historical events such as the First War of Indian Independence, Dandi March, Salt Satyagraha, Jawaharlal Nehru’s famous speech “A tryst with destiny”, Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, and the art, theatre, film, culture and philosophy during these 150 years will be portrayed over a period of six months. The initiative will also throw light on industrial growth and technological advances. The history of the country will be divided into three parts: from 1857 to 1897, 1897 to 1947, and 1947 to 2007.

Mr. Kamath said the university had plans to take “Bharatayan” to schools and colleges in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. The aim of the programme was to make the younger generation aware and proud of the history and achievements of the country.

The Public Relations Council of India had promised to pay Rs. 50 lakh for “Bharatayan”. The infrastructure and additional expenses of the programme would be met by the university, Mr. Kamath said.
