TAMBARAM: Ten days after it was dedicated by Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna, a short stay home for women in Manickam Nagar, Madambakkam, near Tambaram, was damaged by a section of the residents of the area on Tuesday.

The Zonta Resource Centre was opened with a simple function on December 6.

Run with assistance from the Central government through the Central Social Welfare Board and monitored by the Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board, the home’s objective was to provide shelter, counselling, care and food to adolescent girls and women who required them. The inmates would include woman affected by HIV/AIDS.

Residents of the Manickam Nagar objected to it on the grounds that they would be exposed to health hazards if they come into contact with women taking shelter in the home.

They had earlier approached officials of the Madambakkam town panchayat .

Officials promptly told them that the home was functioning legally and it was not within their powers to initiate action against it in any form. And on Tuesday, a few dozen men and women surrounded the short stay home and damaged its compound wall. Using wooden logs and stones, they broke the window panes .

May George, chairperson, Zonta Resource Centre, said they were upset at the incident and regretted that such forms of stigma still persisted. Those living near the home would not be exposed to any forms of health hazard or risks as feared by the residents, she said.
