TAMBARAM: Heavy rain lashed the southern suburbs of Chennai on Wednesday. The rain continued to lash throughout the day, except a respite for a brief while.

The suburbs witnessed heavy showers on Tuesday too. Revenue officials said the rainfall level measured between 8 p.m. on Tuesday and 8 a.m. on Wednesday was 12.16 cm.

Areas in Madipakkam and West Tambaram were among the worst affected. The movement of traffic on arterial roads was severely hit. Train services on the Tambaram-Chengalpattu sector came to a grinding halt as a huge tree fell on the main line track near the Perungalathur Railway Station.

Southern Railway officials said power supply was severed to carry out restoration works.

Trains were stranded on the tracks midway between two stations.

Firemen said they had received calls of huge advertisement hoardings crashing down in Pallavaram.

Power supply hit

Power supply was hit in some pockets as there was a technical snag at the Singaperumal Koil sub-station, from where most places of the southern suburbs receive their supply of electricity.

Senior engineers of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board said staff at sub-stations here were instructed not to restore operations even if incoming supply was resumed, as there was a possibility of tree branches falling on power cables following strong winds.

Municipal staff operated motorpumps continuously to bale out water from vehicular subways in Alandur, Pazhavanthangal, Pallavaram and Tambaram. Some of the lakes in Tambaram taluk began to overflow, but there was no cause for alarm, officials said.
