HYDERABAD: The CBI officials on Wednesday brought underworld don Abu Salem to the city from Mumbai in connection with the fake passport case registered against him five years ago. He was lodged in Chanchalguda jail after being produced before a local special court.

Fled India in 1993

Salem, who fled the country after his name figured in the terrorist blasts in Mumbai in 1993, was arrested along with his companion and film star Monica Bedi, in Lisbon, Portugal by the Interpol in 2002. He was later brought to India since he was facing charges of involvement in terrorist activities in addition to several crimes connected to mafia gangs.

Salem and Monica Bedi were charged with securing passports under fictitious names and addresses in Kurnool, which they used to flee the country. A case was registered in this regard under sections 468 (forgery), 471 (using forged document as genuine) and 420 (cheating) read with 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and relevant provisions of the Passport Act. The CBI took up the investigation.

Monica Bedi was convicted in the same case after the investigators split the case and conducted trial. While the trial court sentenced her to five-year imprisonment, the High Court reduced the sentence to three years. She later moved the Supreme Court and secured bail.

Salem was brought from Mumbai on prisoner transit warrant for completion of trial in the fake passport case.

He would be produced before the special court on Thursday again to initiate further legal proceedings.
