CHENNAI: A day-long workshop on ‘Tax Deduction at Source’ was inaugurated on the Income Tax office premises here on Wednesday.

G. Muthuramakrishnan, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai–I, said the workshop was the first in a series of five planned by the department.

The first workshop was meant for tax detectors of the private sector. The rest were for government employees and others.

While two programmes would be conducted by this month, the others would be held in January.

Mr. Muthuramakrishnan said that during the last financial year, the department collected Rs. 4,801 crore by way of Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) in both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. This year, the department planned to collect Rs. 6,000 crore, an increase of 25 per cent.

Explaining the basic TDS provisions and underlining the importance of filing accurate returns were the objectives of the workshop, he said. If the tax was not detected at source, the organisations had to pay interest and penalty, besides facing prosecution, he warned.

Radha Srivastava, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai–II, said this was one area where there was a scope for the government to earn revenue.

Aswani Kumar, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai–V, suggested that the department hold such workshops in other parts of the State.
