Arbuzov and Ellegast win semifinals easily

MUMBAI: Russia’s Andrey Arbuzov and Germany’s Tino Ellegast, ranked 15 and 40 in the world respectively, notched semifinal victories in the Provogue Mumbai International Match Race 2007 on Wednesday.

Ellegast beat Russia’s E. Nikiforov in the first of two best-of-three semifinals, while Arbuzov finished ahead of Crd R. Mahesh of India, also in straight races.

Mahesh and Nikiforov finished third and fourth respectively with two wins and three losses. Farokh Tarapore did not qualify for last four stage.

The results: Semifinals: Andrew Arbuzov (Rus) bt R. Mahesh (India) 2-0; Ellegast Tino (Ger) bt E. Nikiforov (Rus) 2-0.

Round robin: Tino 5 wins/5 races (5 points, 100 %); Arbuzov 4/5 (4 points, 80%); Mahesh 2/5 (2 points, 40%); Nikiforov 2/5 (2 points, 40%); P. Kochnev 1/5 (1 point, 20%); Tarapore 1/5 (1 point, 20%). — Special Correspondent
