Multi-crore plan to upgrade street-lights

Staff Reporter

67 important roads in the Capital to be upgraded in first, second phases

Phase I to be completed by December 2008 at a cost of Rs.53.20 crore

IIT-Delhi to recommend energy efficiency measures

NEW DELHI: With an eye on the upcoming Commonwealth Games-2010, the New Delhi Municipal Council has decided to undertake up-gradation of street-lighting in its areas in four phases. The proposal was cleared by the civic body here on Wednesday.

According to the NDMC, 67 important roads will be upgraded in the first and second phases which will be completed by December 2008 at an estimated cost of Rs.53.20 crore.

Under the proposed new street-lighting system, the cable between poles will be laid in pipes preferably with trenchless technology to avoid cutting of roads to the extent possible. While the serviceable dismantled fittings and steel poles will be repaired and used to provide street-lighting in colony roads and service roads, the old unserviceable fittings and poles will be discarded and disposed of.

After completion of Phase I and II, the NDMC will be providing similar street-lighting on the remaining main roads under Phase III. This phase is expected to be complete by December 2009.

The up-gradation work on the remaining service lanes and colony roads including automation for the entire street-lighting will be carried out in Phase IV which is proposed to be completed by April 2010.

The civic body had also roped in IIT-Delhi as a consultant to recommend energy efficiency measures and improvement of road lighting keeping in view the specific requirements of the NDMC areas.
