Nod for appointment of consultant for subways, foot over-bridges

NDMC, DIMTS finalise the terms and conditions, consultancy fee

NEW DELHI: After coming under fire for delay in construction of subways and foot over-bridges in its area, the New Delhi Municipal Council has given its approval for appointment of Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System as consultant for the project.

The civic body signed an agreement with DIMTS at its meeting here on Wednesday after finalisation of the terms and conditions and consultancy fee.

The locations finalised for construction of subways are Shahjahan Road, Africa Avenue, Mandir Marg, Baba Kharak Singh Marg (underpass-cum-subway) and Shanti Path (underpass). Foot over-bridges will be constructed on Aurobindo Marg at Safdarjung Airport and near Dilli Haat, Park Street near Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Tilak Marg and Mother Teresa Crescent.

The civic body had initially approved construction of foot over-bridges with lift facilities on a Built-Operate-Transfer basis at eight locations in 2005.

However, the procedure to appoint a consultant and issue tenders could not be followed up leading to re-examination of the locations for the project.

Following a meeting held on the issue with Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken in November, NDMC Chairman Parimal Rai agreed to put the project on fast track in order to start construction in the next three months and complete it by December 2008. However, the budget and the final deadline for the project will be determined only after the appointment of the consultant, according to the civic body.

DIMTS is a special purpose vehicle formed as a joint venture between the Delhi Government and the Infrastructure Development Finance Company to essentially plan, prepare, design and implement projects.
